Although Manchester was not part of my „Dream-Destination-List“, I certainly took the chance to combine the visit of friends and travel to a city I haven’t seen before. So that’s why we spent a weekend in Manchester, which is perfect for a short trip due to cheap and short flights. Today I would like to share my impressions of our trip. So lets start 😉
First of all we should have a good breakfast to be ready for the day. What could be better for this than English breakfast? Beans, bacon, eggs or pancakes – the selection is large. I have chosen waffle topped with marshmallows, ice cream and brownie. Sounds like a calorie bomb? Is was! But the following walk will help to digest. 🙂
Our little tour starts at Piccadelly Station, which is surrounded by nice shops and a huge shopping mall. To get some first impressions of the city, this is the perfect place to stroll around. There no better start to explore a city by just walking around and watch the hustle around.
We continue with our walk in „Gay Village“, a district around Canal Street, which is known for homosexual scene. To be honestly, I wasn’t aware that Manchester has such a popular neighborhood. Even more I was positively surprised! All the colorful flags along the streets, the nice graffiti and cozy bars and restaurants makes this area special. Also at night this is the place to be.
Two streets further you will find Chinatown. Actually I expected a bit more of this area as I really love to spend time in Chinatown by checking out the Chinese supermarkets and shops and eats some dumplings. But the pleasure was too short as Chinatown in Manchester only contains are very small area.
Lets walk along Rochdale Canal Tow Path, where little boats and bridges reminds of Amsterdam for a second. Following the nice path, you will find a super cool restaurant, called „Duke 92“*. The place seems to attract many people with its modern but very cozy charme. Even the „Seeing and beeing seen“ attitude of the guest can be a bit annoying, the menu offers some nice dishes. I can highly recommend the plates for two, which gives you the chance to compose the favorite the dishes you would like to try. With good food and a glas of wine it’s not too bad to watch the spectacle around 😊
After our break we go to the city center. Behind every corner you can find some new shops and beautiful buildings. Our next stop is one of those buildings: The John Ryland Library*. You definitely should visit this place! This building is magical and transfers you to Hogwarts! All the old books, the historic walls and windows are so stunning. And: The entry is for free.
Of course a trip to Great Britan shouldn’t end without having a good burger. For this purpose I can recommend the „Byron Piccadilly Gardens“*. Tasty burgers, cool atmosphere and nice staff. The olives and the homemade lemonade are good as well!
I can conclude, that Manchester is worth a short trip. It’s a cool city with many shops, beautiful buildings and good food. In case you will stay longer than two days, you should also visit the beautiful landscape around the city and Liverpool.
