Two years ago I would have never thought of traveling to Fiji. But life always has some unexpected surprises and so it came, that we extended our trip to Hawaii by visiting Fiji as well this summer. I guess there Is no better place to escape from a winter in New Zealand, because after only 3-4 hours flight, you are in paradise.

Relax at the beach – Hilton Fiji Beach Resort and Spa
We spend one week in Fiji, which was a great duration for this trip. After we arrived, we took a cap to the first stop of our visit: The Hilton Fiji Beach Resort and Spa in Denarau. Denarau is a little cute peninsula of Fiji’s main island “Viti Levu”, which is private owned and only used by luxury hotels. You will notice that quickly due to the very clean and wonderful gardens and spacious hotel facilities at the ocean. A little oasis far away from the poverty of the island.
Nevertheless our stay was awesome. After we checked in, nothing could hold us of from enjoying our 3 bedroom apartment with oceanview, the sun and nice service. The Hilton Resort* was definitely one of the best hotels I have ever been to and I can highly recommend it.

Some people mentioned, it would be better to travel to the small islands around the main island “Viti Levu” when in Fiji. But I have to say, I was very happy with our decision to spend some days in Denarau as well, because its just beautiful. But we also spend some days at one of the smaller islands, I will tell you more about that as well.
While our resort has three different restaurant, we decided to walk along the water to the Port of Denarau, where you can find some shops, a supermarket and some restaurants at the waterfront as well – perfect for a dinner while watching the sunset.

When you visit Fiji, I highly recommend to hire a car for at least one day and to gather some experiences of the true life of Fiji. When driving along the coast road, you will see a lot of decrepit houses, mother carrying their children for kilometres to the next village, families selling their fruits on the streets. And still, its so fascinating to see all the vitality and kindness of the people. I know its always tricky how to handle poverty when travelling to such a country, but I think when you visit a country, you should experience all its facets, to get a complete picture.

That’s how the houses along the main road look like.

Bula in Fiji!
