After four months I am back in New Zealand and due to the fact, that I just have two weeks, I wanna definitely visit my favourite places on the North Island again. I haven’t posted a lot about my time in NZ so far, which is why I want to share more impressions with you this time. As part of my New Zealand series, I wanna start with my favourite beaches around Auckland. In only 45 minutes, you can reach the amazing west coast with all its black sand and beautiful coast lines. I’ve visited the beaches with sunshine and rain, but they look always really nice and are totally worth to visit. So here are my four favourite beaches around Auckland.

Muriwai Beach
With no doubt my favourite beach around Auckland is the Muriwai Beach. It is always a great feeling to drive along the “jungle kind of roads” and then finally arrive on the coast line with these stunning views over the coast. Those long beaches, the giant rocks and this blue cloudy skies form a perfect picture. This beach is especially worth to visit in Nov/Dec, when the gannet colony is around to breed on the rocks. When you walk up to the gannet area, you feel like to enter a gannet kingdom. Even it might be quite smelly sometimes from all the birds, the view is breathtaking and really special. In case you find it a bit to busy due to the tourists, you should visit the small beach next to the main beach. I just love this one! Especially in the evening, when sun goes down and the sunlight is reflecting at those beautiful cliffs.

Piha Beach
The classic within the beaches of the north island shouldn’t be missed on my list. The thing I like the most about this beach, is the black volcanic sand, which even more comes into one’s owe through the huge rock in the middle of the beach. So far I just visited the Piha beach on rainy days, but I really liked the mystic atmosphere, when the ocean is getting a bit foggy and covers the black sand.

Bethells Beach
I have to admit, that I don’t like the Bethells Beach itself that much, but I really love the way to get to the beach. The way is characterised by a beautiful dune landscape. All those cute flowers and nice plants look just amazing. Sometimes the way is the destination, right?

Takapuna Beach
In case you have no time or just no patience to get to the beach, a nice getaway is the Takapuna Beach. This kind of city beach is very lovely, especially on low tide, when you can walk along the rear beach area behind the cliffs. This area is very quite and nice and offers great views to the Rangitoto Island. What I like the most about this beach are the ice cream shops and cafes, which are very close. With an ice cream in you hand and some sand between your toes, the day can’t get better. 🙂
