When we lived in New Zealand and decided to visit Melbourne for a weekend, this trip turned into one of the best decisions we could have make. When walking through the streets of CBD and Chinatown, the world was colourful again and I felt so good to finally arrived in a city, which had it all. It kind of reminded me of the European cities and it just felt incredible to be there. It was also Melbourne, which made me think about our current situation in Auckland and where we decided to quit our jobs and apply for the work and travel visa in Australia. I guess this is also a reason, why this city is kind of special to me and why I just love it.
We stayed only one weekend in Melbourne, but tried to cover the most interesting stops during our trip, which I will share with you now. After you arrived, you should just stroll along the city centre and enjoy the great city vibes. With all its beautiful graffitis, great restaurants and cafes and it’s interesting people, it won’t take long to fall in love with Melbourne. In general I think, Melbourne is a great city to just stroll along the streets instead of ticking off certain hotspots. But lets start with my favourite places in Melbourne.
- Fitzroy
This neighbourhood is just the best place to be! All the fancy stores, the cool people, the artsy atmosphere – heaven on earth. I just loved this place so much! Its a perfect spot to do some shopping and enjoy a glass of wine in a rooftop bar. It reminded me a bit of Berlin and I felt so comfy there. You really shouldn’t miss this place!

2. Carlton Gardens
On your way from Fitzroy to the city centre, you should definitely step by the Carlton Gardens. It’s a beautiful park, where you can just chill and and admire the architecture of the exhibition building as well as the lovely fountains.

3. Old Melbourne Gaol
This former jail has a very special atmosphere. Even a jail does not spread the best vibes, it was a really interesting visit and the building is just nice actually. They also offer tours, but there is enough information for self exploring.
To walk back to the city, you should walk along the Russel Street, which is great for shopping.

4. Graffitti Streets
Melbourne is in general full of great street art, but especially the AC/DC Lane, Hosier Ln and Degrave Streets are very famous for it’s graffitis and a must-see. All those colourful walls and details are just amazing. It feels like being in another world when going along the streets. Even its is quite crowded, you shouldn’t miss this place!

Ok, these were my favourite spots of Melbourne so far. I am sure, there is a lot of more to see, which I will try to cover during my next trip (which is already planned). Did I mention, that you also can have great food in Melbourne? I will share my favourite food spots of Melbourne as well very soon.
